The Catholic Women's League at our Parish has existed for 60 years. The
Diocesan archives show some traces of prior attempts of maintenance of a
council at Holy Ghost Parish in 1924 to 1926, but as of 1930 till 1947 the libraryrecords are silent. The Holy Ghost Catholic Women's League was successfully re-activated by Mrs.Maria Ponaro in 1947. Mrs. Maria Ponaro also ensured that the existence of the Holy Ghost council was documented in Diocesan, Provincial, and National League records.
Our League motto is "For God and Canada". The patroness of the League is the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of "Our Lady of Good Counsel.
Every officiating Pastor at our Parish is our spiritual advisor.
Initially in 1947, when Mrs. Maria Ponaro formed our council there were only 7 members. Our current count is 110 members (the few members presently residing in nursing homes have not been included).
The vitality of the Catholic Women's League members at Holy Ghost Parish is acknowledged not only by our Parish but also by our Diocese.
We are versatile, we organize "0platek", "Swiecone", Palm Sunday Tea, banquets, interment luncheons, and we provide varying support for our Holy Ghost School, etc.
Almost all members of our League participate in Rosary Sodality, serve as
lectors, or sit on church committees. To raise funds, we organize sale of various donated items (new and gently used), and we make "pierogi"; from which, thanks to our parishioners' support, we generate substantial income. We also hold lotteries. All collected funds are donated to our Parish.
Catholic Women's League is the largest national organization of Catholic women in Canada with some 100,000 members.
The League is composed at the Parish, Diocesan, Provincial, and National levels.
The League members at the Parish level meet monthly, whereas the
representatives from our council attend yearly conferences held by the different levels. The Diocese level in April, Provincial level in first week of June, and
National level in mid-August. These conventions are held at different places.
